Description

The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. They are responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised. The incumbent supervises full-time, part-time, and/or casual/relief program services employees during the shift. The incumbent may also supervise volunteers. They have input and may participate in the hiring, orientating, and evaluating staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the management team as relevant and required, particularly as it pertains to day-to-day delivery of services.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of Social Service Staff and the day-to-day operations in accordance with the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Ensure that duties assigned are completed in an appropriate, safe, and efficient manner by the completion of their respective shifts.
  • Has input and may participate in the hiring, orientating, and evaluating of staff and students.
  • During shift, provide support and supervision of staff and assist with crisis intervention, diffusing conflict and problem solving as required to ensure the safety of residents and staff; responds initially to client grievances.
  • Responsible for completing the scheduling of staff to ensure coverage for all vacant shifts, including sick relief, statutory holidays, and vacation coverage.
  • Provide direction and support to social service staff as required.
  • Chair daily shift changes to ensure proper transmission of information from one shift to another and keep records of daily shift change reports.
  • Provide oversight to Diversion Program and completion of Case Management processes.
  • Monitor and review program staff communication logs to ensure proper documentation and communication between shifts.
  • Provide statistical and evaluative information to management when required.
  • May provide back up support to and or assume functions at the front desk area or other program areas as needed.
  • Identify staff training requirements and make recommendations regarding staff development for those supervised.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Acts and Regulations
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment
  • Ensure that proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury or illness, conducting incident investigations when required.
  • Participate in all Health & Safety related accidents and injury investigations.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Maintain information in confidence as required.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved.
  • Comply with all City of Hamilton standards and contractual agreements.
  • Assist the Program Manager in scheduling and chairing staff meetings.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Ensure that staff are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary.
  • Act in the best interest of the employer at all times.

Perform other position related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.
  • This is a Temporary full-time position with 40 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Shifts: 10:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday to Friday

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed an Undergraduate University degree in a related field.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification would be an asset or willing to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance required. Must provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience in a residential setting, experience in supervision, leadership, coaching, and motivating staff and working with marginalized clientele.
  • Working knowledge of issues pertaining to homeless individuals and persons on parole.
  • Experience and working knowledge of the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System.
  • Working in a non-profit and unionized environment is an asset.
  • Experience working with a diverse population and an ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to clients.
  • Knowledge of and proven ability in linking with community resources.
  • Strong computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

 SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead coach and motivate staff.
  • Effectively interact with managers and staff to create a work environment that is positive and mutually supportive.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, when necessary, with minimal supervision.
  • Must have strong organization and planning skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 lbs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; ability to develop and maintain a team environment.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
