Description

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of quality food preparation and service on a daily basis, in accordance with the approved monthly menu.
  • Production of balanced meals economically by using all food donations.
  • Supervise, direct and instruct kitchen helpers in food preparation
  • Provide instruction and supervision to kitchen helpers and volunteers.
  • Supervise Community Service Volunteers, recording their hours worked.
  • Ensure that food waste is kept to a minimum.
  • Assist with checking and putting away food orders on arrival from suppliers.
  • Clean all food preparation devices ensuring they are maintained to a high state of cleanliness.
  • Ensure the kitchen, pantry and the walk-in freezer/fridge are kept clean and organized at all times.
  • Keep updated inventory of all provisions used on the weekend including donations received etc.
  • Prepare special luncheons, etc., as necessary to accommodate visits, etc.
  • On completion of day, ensure the dining room tables and chairs are washed and the area is tidy.
  • Ensure that proper safety precautions and hygiene standards are followed, including Universal Precautions.
  • Treat all clients with respect and dignity at all times.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Maintain all records and reports as required.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of The Salvation Army Booth Centre Policy and Procedures Manual and make suggestions to improve the same.
  • Meet with the Food Manager/Shelter Manager for supervision as scheduled.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Food Manager/ Shelter Manager at six and twelve months in the first year and annually thereafter.
  • Model appropriate qualities for this position – i.e. self-motivation, punctuality, and personal hygiene.
  • Commit to and sign the agency and clients’ confidentiality form.
  • Attend staff meetings of The Salvation Army Booth Centre, Hamilton, Staff Training workshops and conferences, as authorized by the Centre.
  • Work within mandate and mission of the Salvation Army
  • Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre in a professional manner.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a relief position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour paid meal break.

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed Secondary School.
  • Food Handling certificate.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • WHMIS certificate.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, a current original copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • One to three years of prior related experience, with at least one year of institutional cooking experience.
  • Knowledge of Canada Food Guide.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good working knowledge of English language.
  • Ability to lift/carry loads up to forty pounds
  • Able to work with and facilitate volunteers.
  • Ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental approach to clients.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
