Description

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals, may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents.
  • Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
  • Make use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
  • Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.
  • May perform some employee supervisory duties in the absence of the Food Services Manager.
  • May supervise students, volunteers and/or residents in work therapy.
  • May order food supplies.
  • May pick up food supplies from Food for Life and or other suppliers.
  • Ensure that meals are prepared and stored in advance when aware of an upcoming absence.
  • When menu is not followed, note changes made in writing directly on menu and the reason for the change.
  • Receive, check, and store food supplies when they are delivered.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen, all equipment within the kitchen including food storage areas (pantry and freezers) and floors.
  • Report to appropriate staff any client behaviour that is not in keeping with the program of The Lighthouse.
  • Prepare weekly menus that are nutritious based on Canada’s Food Guide and within budgetary allowance.
  • Prepare lunch bags for residents when needed.
  • Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • Prepare all snacks required throughout the weekend.
  • Be a functioning team member in support of the Lighthouse Mission.
  • Complete telephone enquires as needed.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
  • Maintain information in confidence as required
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved
  • Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and the Halton Lighthouse.
  • To attend all seminars and training sessions as requested by Management
  • Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employee Handbook.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management.
  • Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance.
  • Participate in yearly formal evaluation.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Lighthouse in a professional manner at all times.
  • Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible.
  • Read and adhere to the policies and procedures of The Lighthouse.
  • Participate in staff development as required.
  • Work as an effective member of the Lighthouse team, whether staff members or volunteers.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour paid meal break.

Shifts: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed Secondary School.
  • Food handling certificate.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • WHMIS certificate.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Canada Food Guide.
  • One to three years of prior related experience, with at least one year of institutional cooking experience.
  • Good working knowledge of English language.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Able to work with and facilitate volunteers.
  • Ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental approach to clients.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
