Description

Mission: Small Blessings Early Childhood Development Centre exists to provide a wholesome, safe and happy learning environment for all children through modelling the example of Jesus.

 

Responsible for organizing, planning, and implementing a program that is responsive to the spiritual, social, physical, emotional, educational and recreational needs of each child under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Assistant Director and the Director.  Ensure all activities are age appropriate and co-constructed in such a way as to provide an effective and safe learning and development experience for every child while intentionally reflecting the mission of Small Blessings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Child Development and Care:

  • Facilitate the development and behaviour of children.
  • Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative and physical development of children and acceptance of diversity.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate programs.
  • Research the NB Curriculum framework. Implement inclusion policy.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate age-appropriate program.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with the children. Identify and expand upon learning opportunities (teachable moments). Identify and support child’s individual learning and development.  Identify and support diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Maintain documentation of child’s development.
  • Meet health, welfare and safety needs.
  • Administer medication and/or procedures. Accommodate for children’s allergies.
  • Implement preventative health and safety measures.
  • Develop and implement safe travelling and off-site practices while provide adequate supervision during these times. Provide first-aid and CPR.
  • Implement emergency and evacuation plan.
  • Review safety related issues.
  • Follow safe toileting and diapering procedures.
  • Identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and actively supervise children.
  • Meet nutritional needs.
  • Promote healthy eating and proper food serving techniques. Accommodate for special nutritional requirements. Model and teach proper table manners.
  • Guide children’s behaviour
  • Establish with colleagues an environment to foster positive behaviour in the program.
  • Guide and observe children. Implement positive behaviour guidance
  • Facilitate appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem-solving skills and coping skills.
  • Use and promote active listening skills.
  • Protect children from physical and emotional harm.

 

Equipment & Facilities:

  • Develop and maintain a safe environment.
  • Check for physical hazards.
  • Maintain and implement safety standards and protocols.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Adapt programming and equipment to unique settings and situations.
  • Operate and maintain facilities.
  • Maintain equipment, materials and furnishings.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.

Family and Community Relations:

  • Form collaborative partnerships with families.
  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships with families.
  • Orient families to the program.
  • Communicate with families.
  • Collaborate with parents.
  • Provide family resources.
  • Use Community resources.
  • Access and engage community resources, facilities and services.
  • Raise awareness of community events.
  • Involve volunteers.
  • Advocate for children and families.
  • Make connections between families and resources and respect the rights of the child.
  • Provide an inclusive environment.
  • Collaborate with parents to identify strengths, needs and interests of the child.
  • Collaboratively develop and implement inclusion plans with other professionals and parents.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain records for legislation and regulations.
  • Record daily and monthly attendance.
  • Record and report accidents, incidents and occurrences as required.
  • Record cleaning procedures.
  • Record medical procedures and the administration of medication.
  • Maintain up-to-date children’s records.
  • Record facility maintenance and safety checks.
  • Complete child’s daily log for parents.
  • Complete daily program log/record.
  • Attendance at parent meetings, staff meetings and other job-related activities will be part and parcel of this job description and the agreed salary.
  • Work schedule will be 8 (eight) working hours a day, Monday to Friday, for full-time employees.
  • A flexible time schedule will be required.

  • Small Blessings Inclusion Policy (included in Employee Handbook).
  • The information contained in the Small Blessings Employee handbook and ensure the standards and practices therein are followed.
  • Fulfill all other related duties as assigned.

 

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: None.

Internal: Staff members, volunteers, children in the program.

External: Parents and guardians of the kids, agencies.

 

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to Assistant Director.
  • Direct reports: none

 

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Minor level of material responsibilities (proper use and safekeeping of toys, equipment, etc.).
  • Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children, room
  • set-up, moderate amount of teaching, leading etc.
  • Occasional computer work
  • Possibility of intervening in physical confrontations
  • Cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays.
  • The incumbent is required to lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance from others.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

  • The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college Diploma program of at least one full academic year in Early Childhood Education, from a recognized institution or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
  • A Criminal record check and Social Development check must be completed prior to hiring and subsequently every 3 years.
  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Must complete the mandatory New Brunswick curriculum training outline by the NB Curriculum Framework document.

 

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Up to one year of related experience.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
  • Ability to communicate in kind, peaceful manner.
  • Ability to stay calm and patient.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

 

Positions: Full Time (40 hrs/week) and Casual (on-call) positions available.
