A Transformative Camp Experience for Children
A new Salvation Army overnight camp at Jackson’s Point offers children with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to connect with others, creating meaningful interactions for them and their families.
For participants in programs at The Salvation Army London Village and Broadview Village, Grateful Getaway is a free, safe, inclusive setting that allows children to explore, gain independence, and form friendships with peers is a place of freedom, fun, and acceptance where they can be themselves.
Rose attended with her 26-year-old son, James, who lives with Down syndrome and participates in the day and overnight respite programs at London Village. She says the camp provided James with an exciting new environment where he enjoyed the outdoors while taking a break from day-to-day life.
“He enjoyed the beach, pool, bonfire, crafts, walks, and tuck shop,” Rose shares. “It was truly a wonderful experience. Everyone was so receptive and welcoming. You really get a sense of belonging.”
Jenna, a 14-year-old in the London Village respite program, attended the week-long camp with her parents. Her mother, Theresa, says Jenna loved the rock wall, swimming, and arts and crafts while creating lasting memories with her family.
“We made friends, had amazing meals, and our spiritual energy was rejuvenated during our stay,” Theresa says. “We highly recommend the experience. We are so thankful for the retreat—it was exactly what we needed without knowing we needed it.”
Caitlynn, a 13-year-old with a developmental disability affecting her ability to speak, attended Grateful Getaway with her siblings and grandparents and had a wonderful time socializing and meeting new people.
“She made many friends there and is eager to return,” says her grandmother, Susan, who adds that the camp is an empathetic, stress-free environment and a chance to meet other families facing similar situations.
Grateful Getaway supports parents and siblings through its innovative approach to empowering families, while creating positive memories for children.
