Shelter Support

Providing Support and Shelter for the Unhoused

When we think of homelessness, we often imagine people living in a shelter or completely unhoused in a public space. But sometimes, people who are housing-insecure find themselves moving from one unstable situation to another due to low wages, housing scarcity, domestic violence and other factors.
Your generosity supports people who are experiencing housing insecurity:

Emergency Shelter

Emergency shelter can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. At The Salvation Army, our full-circle approach includes housing connections and advocacy, referrals to community-based resources, recovery support for substance use disorders and follow-up encouragement and care.

Safe Houses

Salvation Army safe houses provide a restorative environment where survivors of human trafficking, exploitation, and domestic abuse bridge a life of fear and instability to one of safety and security. Programs include specialized counselling, cooking classes, life-skills development and advocacy.

Transitional Housing

Salvation Army transitional housing units offer a safe, supportive and semi-independent environment where people can rebuild their lives. Services include job training and job search assistance, life-skills coaching, computer access and health and wellness activities.

Extreme Weather Response

During tough winter seasons, The Salvation Army expands the capacity of its emergency shelters. Extreme heat can also be dangerous. Many Salvation Army locations offer cooling centres and/or distribute water to help the vulnerable protect themselves.
