Your Support Sows Seeds of Hope

As a small-scale farmer in Malawi, Elizabeth struggled with ongoing drought and flooding, resulting in failed crops and food insecurity. It seemed like every year this mother of six children could barely provide for her family.

                  Like many other families in rural Malawi, small-scale farming is Elizabeth’s main source of income and the primary way she puts food on the table. Yet farmers like her not only face the challenges of drought and flooding, they also must cope with growing soil degradation and lack of adequate tools. Unfortunately, even one failed crop can have a devastating impact.

                  Thanks to your caring support, Elizabeth’s family is now thriving. Through The Salvation Army’s Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Project, Elizabeth was trained as a Lead Farmer and equipped with seeds, fertilizer, goats, and farming techniques to strengthen her plot against worsening drought.

                  When drought hit two growing seasons ago, Elizabeth was able to use her training to preserve most of her crops. With improved preparation, her determination led to a surplus of food last growing season—the most of any other female farmer in the area. Today, she has emerged as a leader and a shining example to other farmers in the area.

                  “I am very happy,” Elizabeth says. “This project has taught me that with good preparation and hard work, anything is possible. I look forward to learning even more.” Elizabeth is now working to expand her farm and improve her home.

                  Thanks to generous donors, families in Malawi are learning how to grow crops so they have food to eat, reliable income and stability for the next generation.
