What Happens When Someone Says, “Come In”

By Simran Rambhia

Sometimes, hope begins with something simple: a door that is open and someone saying, “Come in.”

At The Salvation Army Centre of Hope in Abbotsford, that welcome means more than simply having a place to receive a meal. It means being met with dignity and kindness, and, just as importantly, knowing they are not facing life’s challenges alone.

“The Santa Shuffle is a beautiful way for our community to come together and make a difference. Knowing that the money raised helps families who are struggling makes every step feel meaningful. It’s not just a run it’s a way to bring hope to people who need it most.” – Candida

For more than two years, Candida has turned to the Centre when providing enough food for her four children, ages 4, 6, 10 and 12, becomes a challenge. She comes for practical support, but her family finds something more than a place where they are welcomed with dignity and treated with care.

While she eats, a Centre of Hope caseworker often spends time with her children. He plays with them, talks with them and gives them his attention. Without a father in their lives, the children have come to see him as something of a father figure.

For children, these moments mean more than simply passing the time. They are moments to feel seen, heard and cared for. A simple conversation or a few minutes of play can help a child feel connected and remind them that they matter.

This is what community support can look like. It may start with a meal, but it can grow into relationships built on care, encouragement and belonging. It means seeing the person, not just the need, and reminding them that they are not alone when life gets difficult.

The Santa Shuffle helps make that support possible.

On December 5, Abbotsford will come together for a morning of running, walking and Christmas spirit. Friends and families will gather, put on their Santa hats and celebrate the season.

Behind the celebration is a chance to support neighbours facing hardship. Funds raised through the Santa Shuffle help The Salvation Army provide food and essential support to families in the community.

Participants may never meet the people they help, but their support makes a difference. Together, they are helping build a community where no one has to face difficult times alone.

Sometimes, hope is simple. It is knowing that when you need help, there is a place to turn and a place to come in.

Join the Santa Shuffle this December and help keep that welcome open for families in Abbotsford.
