The Salvation Army Joins Emergency Response in Venezuela After Devastating Earthquake

On June 24, two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Currently, the death toll stands at around 920 people, but the number is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Many people living in the areas hardest hit by this disaster are forced to sleep outdoors for their safety.

The Salvation Army in Venezuela, led by Regional Coordinator Edicson Sánchez, has deployed a team of experienced emergency response personnel and volunteers to the front lines, who, in collaboration with local authorities and churches, are assisting the relief efforts.

Due to the displacement of many people, there is an urgent need for essential items.

“The preliminary assessment indicates significant need in the areas of food assistance, hygiene supplies, household items, sleeping mats and blankets. Many people are currently sleeping outdoors in streets, parks and other open spaces due to safety concerns and damage to their homes.”

“These priorities will continue to be refined as additional assessments are completed and access to affected communities improves,” says Ricardo Gomez, The Salvation Army’s Community Director for the Latin America North Territory.

The Salvation Army aims to reach areas with insufficient emergency response and unmet humanitarian needs. While access has been challenging, teams are preparing to arrive at affected areas and adapt to evolving conditions.

An initial amount of funding has been sent to The Salvation Army’s Latin America North Territory to support the purchase of emergency supplies. However, more donations will be needed to aid a relief effort of this scale.

The organization has also presented a Rapid Response project to guide teams assisting.

The Salvation Army has been present in Venezuela since 1972.

By making a generous gift today, you will provide food, water, hygiene kits, essential supplies, and emotional and spiritual care for people affected by the earthquakes and for first responders.
