The Run That Makes Room at the Table
By Simran Rambhia
For some families, the hardest question of the day isn’t “What’s for dinner?”
it’s “Would there be enough?”
For some families, putting a healthy meal on the table isn’t always easy. When grocery bills rise, parents are often left wondering how they’ll make sure there’s enough for everyone.
But in Ottawa, a little extra support can change what happens around the kitchen table.

At The Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre, funds raised through the Santa Shuffle helps families experiencing food insecurity access nutritious food, practical skills and support that can make a lasting difference.
Through the Food Share, local families facing food insecurity receive nutritious food each week, helping ease the pressure of rising grocery costs and freeing up money for other essentials.
But it’s about more than food. It’s about giving families the skills and confidence to make healthy meals on a budget.
The Make and Take program teaches participants how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals using simple ingredients and practical recipes. Because eating well shouldn’t be a luxury.
For children, that support continues at school. The School Lunchbox program helps provide healthy lunches and snacks, so children can start their day ready to learn, play, and grow.
That’s what makes the Santa Shuffle more than a 5K run or 1K Elf Walk.
Every step can help put food in a family’s kitchen, skills in someone’s hands, and a healthy lunch in a child’s backpack.
Food insecurity isn’t just a statistic. It’s a parent trying to make ends meet. It’s a child going to school hungry. And it’s a family wondering how they’ll make their next meal stretch.
This December, when Santa Shuffle participants take to the streets of Ottawa, they’ll be running for something bigger than the finish line.
They’ll be helping make sure more families have food on the table, and more children have the fuel they need to thrive.
This December, don’t just run to finish. Run for what comes after.
