Salvation Army Food Bank Helps Client When It Is Most Needed

When Carrie moved to Wiarton, Ont., she faced financial and personal hardships that made it difficult to put food on the table each month.

“Every day felt like a challenge,” Carrie remembers. “I was very sad and hungry at times.”

Thankfully, things turned around after she connected with The Salvation Army’s food bank. The organization became a place that represented support during a period of transition.

“When I moved here in 2023, I needed help to get back on my feet and The Salvation Army in Wiarton was there for me,” Carrie says.

“I was very sad and hungry at times.”

Looking back at the first time she walked into the food bank, Carrie recalls feeling at ease, which helped calm the anxiety she felt before accessing the service.

“I remember how everyone smiled at me and asked how I was doing. They made me feel at home and like I was cared for and loved.”

With the support of the food bank, Carrie’s situation improved. Given the current economic state in the country, she believes these services are vital for people.

“I think it is very important to have The Salvation Army in Wiarton,” she says. “People like me need it for the love and care we receive. Without the organization, we would be lost, with nowhere to turn.”

In 2025, there were 2.14 million requests for assistance made to The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda. Of these, 1.4 million were related to food support.

“People like me need it for the love and care we receive.”

Had The Salvation Army’s aid not been available, Carrie says she would have felt defeated and hopeless.

“My life has changed for the better and I feel blessed for having the Wiarton Salvation Army and its church. I am grateful for everything they have done for me,” Carrie shares.

For others facing difficulties, she recommends reaching out to the organization and trusting that help is available.

“If anyone just needs someone to talk to or maybe needs beds, food, clothing, anything, The Salvation Army is always there for you,” Carrie concludes.
