A Gift of Music: A Dream Realized at Berkshire Citadel

At The Salvation Army, we believe in the power of transformation, of lives, of communities, and of hearts. Sometimes, that transformation begins with a simple act of generosity.

Recently, I witnessed the arrival of a remarkable gift at Berkshire Citadel, thanks to the kindness of the Al AZHAR Shrine Patrol in Calgary. Upon hearing about our desire to start a music program for young people, they reached out with an incredible offer, a donation of musical instruments that had been lovingly stored away, unused for years.

When I visited them, they welcomed me warmly and began pulling down case after case of instruments from their storage space. It was a moment of grace and generosity I won’t soon forget. The photos we took that day, of the Shriners loading up my truck with instruments, tell a story of community, compassion, and shared purpose.

Back at Berkshire Citadel, we placed the instruments in the sanctuary, where they seemed to come alive once more. In our very first week, nine young people gathered to learn, play, and discover the joy of music. The room was filled with laughter, curiosity, and the first notes of what we hope will be a lifelong love of music.

For me, this is more than just a program. As a former police officer turned pastor, I’ve seen firsthand the difference the arts can make in a young person’s life. Music teaches discipline, builds confidence, and creates a sense of belonging. It gives our youth a voice and a place to be heard.
This music program has been a dream of mine for years. Thanks to the Al AZHAR Shrine Patrol, that dream is now a reality. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and partnership. Their gift is already making a difference, and we know this is just the beginning.
