Volunteering with Heart: Duane & Phyllis Inspire Others to Give Back with The Salvation Army
Every Thursday morning, Duane and Phyllis walk through the doors of The Salvation Army’s warehouse with purpose and joy. For them, volunteering isn’t just something they do, it’s part of who they are.
Married for 35 years, Duane and Phyllis have made giving back a shared tradition. Whether it’s sorting school backpacks or organizing Christmas toys, they’re a familiar and cherished part of the team. Duane’s journey with The Salvation Army began before the pandemic as a Kettle Volunteer. “You meet such wonderful, kind people,” he says, reflecting on those early days. His warmth and dedication quickly led him to other roles, including serving as a bus chaperone for Pine Lake Camp.

Duane’s understanding of community support runs deep. Raised by a single mother alongside three siblings, he remembers the challenges of growing up with limited resources. “I don’t remember The Salvation Army specifically,” he shares, “but I know my mom relied on organizations like it to get by.” That empathy fuels his commitment to helping others today.
Phyllis, a former Teacher’s Assistant, brings a special insight to the backpack program. “A new backpack can make all the difference,” she says. “School can be rough, and kids can be mean. Starting the year off feeling good matters.” Her experience helps her see the impact of even the smallest gestures.
Last year, health challenges kept them from participating in distribution events, a disappointment they felt deeply. But this year, they’re back, energized and excited to see children receive their backpacks firsthand. “Volunteering has become part of our normal,” Phyllis says. “It’s good to be back to normal.”

They’ve spent years working in the old warehouse and are thrilled with the new space. “It makes sorting so much easier,” Duane notes. But while they’re happy to do the behind-the-scenes work, it’s the distribution days that truly light them up. “Seeing the kids’ faces, that’s the best part.”
Their enthusiasm is contagious. Duane and Phyllis have even organized group volunteer opportunities for friends and family, encouraging others to experience the joy of giving. “We love when kids get to volunteer too,” Phyllis adds. “It helps them understand how little some people have.”
Their message is simple but powerful: “We get way more out of volunteering than we put in.” And it’s clear that their presence brings just as much joy to the team as it does to the families they serve. They speak fondly of Kristina and the staff, feeling welcomed and supported every step of the way.
Duane and Phyllis remind us that behind every act of kindness is a story, and sometimes, that story is a love story, a legacy of compassion, and a Thursday morning tradition that makes the world a little brighter.
