Winnipeg Day Camp Helps Kids Shine

Children laughing and playing, making new friends, and learning new stories, spending their days active and engaged: this is what Kids Kamp at Heritage Park Temple (HPT) in Winnipeg offers for six weeks each summer. Summer day camp has been offered at Heritage Park for 15 years and is one of the programs made possible through donations such as Christmas kettles and the Santa Shuffle.

Each week has a fun theme, such as ‘Animal Planet’. Activities include interactive Bible stories, indoor and outdoor games, activities and crafts, and outings to the Zoo, a local pool, or a splash pad. During the Animal Planet week, the camp even had a visit from a local exotic animal sanctuary.

There are 30 camp spots available per week. Children six through 12 can be registered for one week or several, depending on each family’s needs. With a mix of paid staff and volunteers, camp is also an excellent way for older youth to be involved and gain work experience.

Early drop off allows children to start their camp day as early as 8 am, and late pick up is available until 4:30 pm to accommodate working parents. The day’s activities run from 8:30 to 3:30. The cost of camp is $100 for the first child and less per additional child. Thanks to fundraisers like the Santa Shuffle and the Christmas Kettle campaign, HPT can subsidize the program for low-income families.

Kids Kamp is one of the many ways HPT connects with children and families in the community. They also offer a Fusion family program on the last Friday of each month with a meal and a family-friendly activity. Fusion Fridays often see upwards of 50 participants.

Heritage Park Temple will be holding a Rally Weekend to welcome new corps officers, Lieutenants Jenelle and Dion Durdle, and welcome families back to church after the summer break, September 19th – 21st. Join their Facebook group for updates.
