HAMILTON, Ont. — A last-minute transportation cancellation nearly derailed a decades-long summer camp tradition held by The Salvation Army Ontario Camping Ministries.

The Salvation Army Hamilton Community and Family Services has been sending local children from families who could not otherwise afford the experience to the organization’s camps in Jackson’s Point and Muskoka since 1948.

Just days before campers were scheduled to leave on July 6, the transportation company booked for the trip, unexpectedly cancelled, putting the beloved outing in jeopardy and leaving 80 Hamilton children without transportation.

After spending the weekend making calls to find a replacement, the Salvation Army Hamilton Community and Family Services received an offer of help from Hamilton Cardinals owner and president Eric Spearin, who provided the team’s bus and driver, Lloyd, to transport the campers.

The Cardinals completed two round trips between Hamilton and Jackson’s Point to transport all 80 campers.

“What we thought would be a devastating disappointment for 80 children quickly turned into an incredible example of compassion and community,” Salvation Army Hamilton Community and Family Services director Zoe Boustead said in a statement.

Community relations co-ordinator Cindy Taylor said the team’s assistance ensured the children did not miss out on a tradition that has served Hamilton families for generations.

To show their appreciation and gratitude, The Salvation Army Mountain Citadel Band performed the national anthem before the game.
