Salvation Army’s Multicultural Ministries Helps New Canadians Thrive
For many newcomers to Canada, adjusting to life in a new country, and learning the language while finding a sense of belonging in a unique culture can be overwhelming.
Zainab, a recent immigrant from Afghanistan, knows this experience first-hand.
“For newcomers, everything is very hard, and we need hope,” she says.
Zainab is just one of the 40 participants looking to build productive lives in Canada through The Salvation Army Barrhaven Church’s Multicultural Ministries program, which launched last fall and includes an English Conversation class, supported by The Salvation Army mission partner Love New Canadians. The organization helps local churches create a welcoming environment for immigrants, refugees, and newcomers.
Barrhaven’s curriculum introduces seasonal vocabulary that connects participants to Canadian traditions, such as Thanksgiving, in meaningful ways.
Miguel Esparza from Columbia finds the classes valuable for improving his English and connecting with people from different backgrounds.
“The conversation classes are a support to improve my English level and introduce me to Canadian culture. I want to thank all of the volunteers and all the people who make this space possible,” Miguel says.
Barrhaven Church corps officer Captain Laura Van Schaick says the Multicultural Ministries program is based on The Salvation Army’s core values of hope, service, dignity, and stewardship.
“With so many new Canadians arriving in our community, we saw a wonderful opportunity to walk alongside them, offering support, friendship, and hope as they begin this new chapter,” says Captain Van Schaick. “Our partnership with the Ottawa Multicultural Lions Club has been invaluable. Their volunteers contribute to the classes, and we promote their newcomer support programs in return.”
