Major Magic: Building Engagement One Trick at a Time

At The Salvation Army Oakville Community Church, Captain Matthew Trottier, better known as “Major Magic”—is making a unique impact.

For years, he’s captivated audiences with his magic shows, blending sleight-of-hand with meaningful messages that help build trust.

“I use magic to create connections,” explains Captain Trottier, who gives himself a Salvation Army rank promotion to Major Magic. “When people see the effort and creativity they feel comfortable and become more open to engaging with us.”

Captain Trottier doesn’t just entertain—he builds bridges, leading to significant local support, including a $5,000 donation to The Salvation Army. He also uses magic to share Biblical teachings in an engaging and accessible way.

“Building trust and creating engagement that is reciprocal is essential, and I’ve been able to do this with a card trick that includes the four kings to tell the Christmas story and share the message without it feeling forced or cheesy,” he says.

His approach has even inspired new ministry initiatives, as last summer, Captain Trottier launched a Vacation Bible School called Magic Academy, teaching the skillful art of sleight-of-hand to children that correlated lessons about Jesus.

“The kids’ reactions were priceless, and it was a reminder of why I do this,” he recalls. “I’ve been performing magic for as long as I can remember, including as a youth pastor in Ajax.”

Performing at local events like Salvation Army church carnivals, Rib Fests, Rotary Club gatherings and others, Major Magic has become a familiar face in Oakville. Involvement in community events has enhanced the church’s visibility and reputation, increasing attendance at Sunday church services and programs.

“At Rib Fest, we were the only church promoting our Vacation Bible School,” Captain Trottier says. “That kind of presence matters. Magic is another tool to share love, compassion and hope.”

For Major Magic, every disappearing coin and multiplying banana illusion serves a greater purpose. It creates magic moments that unite people and open doors to form deeper relationships.
