Future Leaders Find Renewal and Connection at Ontario Retreat

A weekend retreat at Jackson’s Point Camp was an opportunity for Salvation Army youth leaders from across Ontario to reflect on their roles in guiding young people toward growth and positivity.

The third annual Youth Leader Retreat combined worship, learning, and community, leaving attendees feeling inspired and ready to embrace the challenges of their transformative work.

“The energy in the room was incredible,” says Victoria Reid, youth ministries and outreach coordinator at The Salvation Army Oshawa Temple. “It was such a blessing to connect with others from across the division and witness the incredible work happening in each ministry unit.”

The event brought together mentors, creating an environment of collaboration and reflection. Keynote speakers Danny and Leeann MacKay of Equip Canada, an organization that prepares individuals for real-world ministry through hands-on missionary training provided insightful teachings during the retreat.

“This time away was exactly what I needed,” says Matthew Zimmerman, children and youth coordinator at The Salvation Army North Toronto Community Church. “As someone new to this role, it was amazing to spend a weekend with others who are navigating the same challenges and opportunities. Sharing ideas and experiences was invaluable to my journey.”

A highlight for many attendees was the “share and care” session, where participants openly discussed their challenges and celebrated successes from the past year.

“The weekend was about connecting and building a sacred and tangible community,” says Ontario divisional children and youth secretary Major Jodi Dunstan. “We hope that everyone who participated feels rejuvenated and ready to continue their vital ministry.”

The program also included worship, team-building activities, and discussions aimed at growth and personal development while for many, it struck the perfect balance between rest and renewal.

“I still have the scene in my mind—worship music, guest speakers encouraging boldness, and the feeling of being loved and valued,” says Ella Xia Bao, children’s ministry coordinator at The Salvation Army Scarborough Citadel. “The weekend reminded us that we are significant and can make a difference.”

“Thanks to the amazing team behind this event,” added Paige Sharp, children and youth program coordinator at The Salvation Army Mississauga Community Church. “It was a transformative time to reflect on the blessings of youth ministry and find strength to overcome challenges.”
