A Tranquil Retreat for Individuals Experiencing Disabilities
At The Salvation Army London Village, a newly established immersive room offers a haven of serenity, significantly alleviating stress and fostering relaxation for program participants.
The Snoezelen Room is a soothing sensory space carefully designed with a blend of sounds, lights, scents, and textures. It aims to create a feeling of tranquility, catering to individuals aged five and up experiencing disabilities, including autism, dementia, and brain injury. The new room has quickly become a cherished addition to London Village.
Richard, who participates in the autism spectrum disorder program, enjoys every minute in the Snoezelen Room, and never wants to leave.
“I am thrilled that London Village has so many amenities, and I was so excited to find out they created a Snoezelen Room,” says Richard’s mom, Selina. “We no longer have to travel farther to use one and Richard really loves his time using the room.”
Studies show that multi-sensory rooms used by people experiencing disabilities or those on the autism spectrum reduces anxiety, improves muscle tone, benefits cognitive, sensory, and physical functions, and provides an experience that is both stimulating and relaxing.
“This sensory room is a wonderful addition to our existing programming, enhancing the quality of life for all our program participants. They are thoroughly enjoying this new space, which provides them with a safe and stimulating environment,” says Sherry Rowland, adult day program director at London Village.
Funding for the Snoezelen Room came from a Salvation Army Innovation Grant for the purchase of specialty equipment and room upgrades the create an inviting, positive and engaging environment for London Village program participants.
