Matthew Allen Gives and Receives by Volunteering as Shieldy Mascot

During the Christmas season, Matthew Allen is everywhere representing The Salvation Army as the mascot Shieldy. His eight years of volunteerism and selfless spirit in giving his time extends year-round to bring joy and hope to communities and individuals assisted by The Salvation Army. For National Volunteer Week, The Salvation Army in Ontario is proud to highlight Matthew’s dedication and tireless commitment to making a difference in the lives of others through volunteerism.

Q: Why do you volunteer with The Salvation Army?

A: I want to help various communities by giving my time whenever and wherever I’m needed. Volunteering is very good for my physical and mental health. My stress levels are reduced, and I am much happier. When I am volunteering, I am giving back to the community that I love.

Q: What volunteer roles have you held with The Salvation Army?

A: I have volunteered at three different Salvation Army Thrift Stores, The Salvation Army mascot Shieldy, The Salvation Army’s Marketing and Communications department, two Salvation Army Community and Family Services food banks and The Salvation Army Ontario Distribution Centre.

Q: What do you like most about volunteering?

A: I enjoy making new friends, learning new skills and helping others by putting a smile on their face. I feel I am making a difference by doing this.

Q: What have you learned through volunteering?

A: Volunteering has given me independence, retail experience and warehouse experience. I have learned time management skills, teamwork and empathy for people who are going through tough times, as well as compassion for all people.

Q: What role does faith and The Salvation Army play in your life?

A: Faith is at the heart of everything I do. I see injustices, corruption and disasters and how they affect people’s lives. I must show my experiences of the unconditional love of Jesus in my work. I believe I am called to be a witness and serve others as a reflection of God’s unconditional love. The mission of The Salvation Army is to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs, and be a transforming influence in the communities that God has placed me.

Q: Why should people volunteer with The Salvation Army?

A: I think people should volunteer with The Salvation Army so that they can give back to their communities, meet great people and show love to others. By volunteering with The Salvation Army, I am able to accomplish this.

Thank you, Matthew, for all you do in support of The Salvation Army and everyone we serve in meeting human needs as a transforming influence in the communities of our world.
