Creative Art Programs Connect Generations in Scarborough
Generations Create, a unique multi-generational program developed by The Salvation Army Agincourt Community Church, brings young and old together for quality time in a creative setting.
The program aims to lessen a disconnect between generations by getting kids into an environment where arts crafts replace smartphones and social media. Children and youth from ages 5 to 14 come together and try their hand at a variety of creative activities each week. The Generations Create program is funded with a $46,000 Innovation Grant from The Salvation Army, Canada and Bermuda Territory.
“The entire purpose of this program is to bring individuals and families together in a safe environment where they can let their creativity shine in a collaborative way while building lasting relationships,” says Lt. Scott Allen of Agincourt Community Church.
“We could be doing craft work, knitting, crocheting, hand-sewing, photography, painting, puppet-making, papier mache, drawing and the list just keeps growing. It is a time away from the digital world that allows different generations to come together to spend quality time and be creative,” Lt. Allen said.
Rose Patrick participates in the program with her two children, while also volunteering at Generations Create.
“The experience I’ve had with the kids has been very positive and it’s something that we look forward to every week. It’s nice to come here and relax with these activities and art programs offered by these amazing people,” Rose said.
“It is a really good opportunity to step out of our immediate neighbourhood, to see who else is around and to make new friends. And it’s also been a great opportunity for us to find work as volunteers.”
Lt. Allen said the idea for Generations Create came from a similar program that ran at an arts organization in Toronto. A devotional component was added to the concept to fit with the core values of The Salvation Army.
Generations Create is not only a multi-generational program, but also multi-cultural collaboration. The Agincourt community is diverse, and this type of initiative provides inclusive opportunities for everyone.
“We’re here to build community and bring individuals and families together to develop their talents and improve communication skills with each other,” says Lt. Allen. “We are very excited about the possibilities, opportunities and outcomes from Generations Create.”
