SafeCare aims to creates stronger families and brighter futures for children in Ottawa. The Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre in-home program is for parents from age 18-30 with children from birth to age 6.

Launched in June with four Bethany Hope Centre staff, SafeCare brings support and guidance to new parents to contribute to a healthy and positive development for their kids.

“SafeCare is unique because we visit the parents’ home, and that is a big plus for them. They do not have to take the bus with their child and carry with them all the items a child requires,” explains Carolyne Normand, Program Coordinator, and a Parent Support Worker at Bethany Hope Centre.

Subject areas are Parent-Infant/Child Interaction, Home Safety and Child Health, with each module running for six weeks. Topics include how to manage your child’s difficult behaviors, ways to increase positive time with your child, how to make your home safer and how to keep your child healthy to reduce the risk of illness and injury.

“Many parenting classes will teach about child development but not the day-to-day interaction with their child and the challenges that brings. We ensure parents have all the tools they need to create a positive environment and know the steps they can take to make life less stressful.”

Nine families, a mix of both moms and dads, have signed up for the free SafeCare program since its start in June. Contact Bethany Hope Centre at 705-725-1733 for more information or to register.
