A different type of sound will bring campers together at this summer’s Ontario Senior Music Camp.

Although the music component of the camp is not possible because of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the organizers vow to keep the sound alive at two one-day Adventure Days at Jackson’s Point Camp on Lake Simcoe.

The Ontario Senior Music Camp Adventure Days take place July 23rd and 30th for students aged 12 to 18 and registration is now open. With pandemic restrictions easing in Ontario, the number of spaces has increased to allow 45 campers per day to participate.

“This is a chance for kids to see each other and feel normal and have some time away from home and away from their screens,” said Sarah Rayment, who directs the camp alongside her husband, Phil.

He said many participants in the Ontario Senior Music Camp come from The Salvation Army church community, so campers renew their friendships year after year. The Rayments have been involved in the Jackson’s Point Camp for the last dozen years. Phil grew up attending Salvation Army camps as a youngster and that experience naturally led him to administer camps as an adult.

“We are both teachers, so we naturally enjoy working with kids. I would say it’s definitely our favourite week of the year. It’s great to develop programs and to see the kids respond positively and to have the faculty grow in their spiritual life,” Phil said.

With one day at the camp, there are plenty of activities to keep campers busy. Jackson’s Point has the usual camp activities of canoeing, kayaking and swimming, as well as a rock climbing, archery, and newly installed ropes course.

The Rayments hope they can bring back the full week of Ontario Senior Music Camp programming in 2022. But for now, campers can register for Adventure Days by sending an email to smcinstrumental@gmail.com with the preferred date and any dietary restrictions. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free, though transportation is not included.
