“Volunteers Are Love in Motion!” Goderich Volunteers Are Giving Hope Everyday!
Trish Cornfield moved back to Goderich, Ontario from Alberta about eight years ago and decided now that she had some extra time on her hands she wanted to get involved in volunteering in her community.
Her experience with The Salvation Army began by volunteering at a Christmas Kettle and then she began working at the men’s shelter at the Lakeshore United Church which was being run by The Salvation Army. Trish cooked, served meals and did fellowship with the clients at the shelter.
“Everyone has a story and sometimes they just need someone to listen . I found that a lot among the guys at the shelter and even among the other volunteers,” said Trish.
In March of last year, Trish decided to help out at The Salvation Army Food Bank sorting and organizing food items for families. She also delivered food hampers at Christmas time in Clinton and Goderich. Trish also volunteered her time grocery shopping for those that couldn’t get out of their homes.
When she is not volunteering at The Salvation Army, Trish looks after an elderly lady who now lives in a long-term care home. “I shop for her, take her to appointments and during the pandemic we go for drives. This helps her to overcome isolation she may be feeling. ,” said Trish.
“After volunteering I experience a lot of joy,” said Trish. “The Salvation Army does so much for people, and I don’t think a lot of people know that. For example, in 2011 we had a Tornado here in Goderich and it was The Salvation Army that stepped up to help people.”
“I heard it said once that, ‘volunteers are love in motion!’ This is a great quote, and it personifies the contributions made by Trish to our ministry unit,” said Salvation Army Lieutenant Derek Kerr. “Well done, Trish and thank you!”
