Church Member Hand Crafts Protective Shields for Community & Family Service Units

As we go through this global pandemic together one thing is for sure: there has been no shortage of people doing incredible things to assist those in need.

Take Ron Smith, for example.

When approached by Tammi Ritson, Community & Family Services Specialist, with the possibility of making portable vapor shields for table tops to protect staff and families, Ron was quick to jump on board.

“I was contacting a couple places to inquire about the possible cost of portable sneeze guards that could be used at our ministry units to help protect our staff and the families. I was receiving quotes that were well over $200,” said Tammi.

“I asked around about how difficult it might be to make them and that’s when my dad offered to make the shields.”

Ron, a church member at The Salvation Army’s Mississauga Community Church, a fourth-generation Salvationist and Tammi’s father, has a heart for serving in any way he can.

He hand-crafted 14 shields, all to be distributed to the respective Community & Family Service units who requested a need for them.

“He has always gone out of his way to ensure those around him are well cared for; quick to help those in their church family at Mississauga Community Church as well as their community,” praised Tammi.

During the time of COVID-19, Community & Family Services locations have undergone modifications in respect to how daily business is conducted. Several locations identified a need for some type of barrier that would protect the space between staff and individuals coming in for food assistance, in an effort to maintain social distancing but still be available to provide support.

“If my dad can find a way to help those in need, he will do everything possible to do so,” said Tammi.

When asked why he was so eager to help, Ron said, “I decided to do it because they were essential to help keep people safe. I recognize those that are continuing to serve on the front lines and am more than happy to play a part in ensuring their safety.”
