As with many people in Canada who are finding ways to lift their spirits during COVID-19, Salvation Army Picton Officers Lieutenants Joseph and Donna Ludlow are staying positive throughout these uncertain times. They are getting their creative juices flowing in finding ways to stay connected with the Picton community.

Utilizing technology, The Salvation Army in Picton is providing members of the congregation with a digital experience for Bible Study, Sunday School and Church Services.

“We also created ‘Church to Go’ boxes that include a guided spiritual activity, literature to read and other supports,” says Lieutenant Donna Ludlow. “One week we did ‘Soup, Soap and Salvation’; the box had a bar of soap, a cup of soup and information about the history of The Salvation Army.”

These ‘Church to Go’ boxes are delivered to members of the congregation by Salvation Army volunteers.

The Salvation Army in Picton’s Family Services is continuing to provide food services to members of the community who are in need.

Volunteers and Salvation Army staff speak with clients over the phone beforehand, ensuring that a pre-packed food hamper is made to fit the needs of each family.

A barrier is set up in the foyer so that a Salvation Army staff member can still be available for anyone who requires counselling or prayer.

“We don’t want to just hand them the food and they leave. We want to take the opportunity to connect with people who may need to pause for prayer or to talk to someone,” explains Lieutenant Donna.

Volunteers from the congregation are also taking the opportunity to phone members of the community, especially those who are living alone, to see if they are able to provide food items, pick up prescriptions, and other necessities.

Lieutenant Donna says, “We are so grateful for the volunteers that are helping us. People have stepped up to help with phone calling, assisting at the food bank, and in other ways.”

Members of the Picton community have continued to support The Salvation Army through financial donations, including a local business which donated $5,000.

“We are so grateful for the community of Picton and the support we are receiving,” says Lieutenant Donna.
