Salvation Army thrift store worker receives box of donated items

Make a Difference on “Give Something Away Day”

Spring and summer are perfect seasons for cleaning out and decluttering closets, garages, cars or any other storage spaces. You may want to throw out many of the items you plan to dispose of, but as the old saying goes, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”

On July 15, The Salvation Army celebrates “Give Something Away Day.” This is a great opportunity for you to positively impact your community by donating items you no longer need.

“Give Something Away Day is a meaningful reminder that the things we no longer use can have new life and purpose,” says Ted Troughton, managing director of The Salvation Army Thrift Store. “When you choose to donate your pre-loved items, you’re doing more than clearing out your home; you’re having a direct impact on someone’s life.”

All donations made to The Salvation Army Thrift Store support programs and services that assist individuals across Canada who are facing challenges such as homelessness, addiction or financial and food insecurity.

“When you choose to donate your pre-loved items, you’re having a direct impact on someone’s life.”

These programs and services include emergency shelters, food banks, addiction support, life skills programs and initiatives for children and youth.

The resources made available to clients, thanks to the proceeds of donations, have a great impact on those trying to rebuild their lives.

When you donate, you’re also contributing to environmental protection and helping to create a more sustainable future. Instead of ending up in landfills, gently-used clothing and household goods are given a second chance.

By reusing and recycling, The Salvation Army Thrift Store diverts millions of pounds of items from landfills each year.

You can participate in Give Something Away Day not only by donating. You can also volunteer or host a donation drive in your neighbourhood or community, to collect items that will help vulnerable people.

The simple gesture of giving can support others, fund essential services and protect the environment.
