How Donations Can Save Our Earth (WATCH)
Over the last few weeks, images of our planet have gone viral thanks to NASAs Artemis mission. The stunning beauty captured in those photos shows us where we live and hopefully where future generations will thrive, too, if we act with the environment in mind.
April 22 marks Earth Day, a date that reminds us that the choices we make can have a lasting impact on our world. For those looking to make a difference, donating unused items or shopping second-hand can be an easy and meaningful way to reduce waste. Through its thrift stores, The Salvation Army in Canada gives people the opportunity to do just that.
Last year, The Salvation Army Thrift Store diverted more than 80 million pounds of clothing, housewares and books from landfills. Rather than being discarded, these donations were sold at affordable prices, giving them a new life.
Choosing pre-owned items not only lessens the environmental footprint, but it also allows those facing financial insecurity to afford well-maintained goods.
Donating to The Salvation Army Thrift Store also helps fund the organization’s services and programs, including shelter, food assistance and emergency disaster response.
Thrifting isn’t just for those who need it most; it’s also for anyone who wants to shop more sustainably and make a positive difference.
Initiatives in 2026
To commemorate Earth Day this year, The Salvation Army Thrift Store launched a campaign of educational and interactive events to encourage Canadians to make eco-friendly choices.
One of these initiatives was a partnership with social media influencer Rebecca Tandon, who dressed in stylish thrifted clothing and quizzed passersby in the streets of Toronto about the environmental impact of recycling unused items. Participants who answered correctly received discount coupons for Salvation Army thrift stores.
Continued Commitment
While Earth Day comes once a year, everyone is encouraged to continue donating and shopping sustainably whenever possible.
One donation and one purchase at a time can contribute to the health of our planet.
