Food Bank Supports a Volunteer Facing Difficult Times

For Nadine Franklin, from St. Catharines, Ont., The Salvation Army has been part of her life for some time, first providing an opportunity to give back and now offering support in times of need.

“I am a client now, but originally I got involved with The Salvation Army during the Christmas Kettle Campaign as a volunteer,” Nadine shares.

Over the past few months, Nadine has dealt with health concerns. The additional expenses associated with treatment and special dietary needs created financial challenges. She began accessing the Army’s food bank in St. Catharines.

“With my health problems plus other expenses, everything started adding up.”

“With my health problems plus other expenses, everything started adding up,” Nadine says. “Going to the food bank has been good because they give me healthy products that I can eat, which cost more than average at regular grocery stores.”

Nadine recently had a successful surgery to address her health concerns. After the procedure, her doctor recommended increasing her calcium intake to prevent further complications.

“I have a long list of food items that can help me increase my calcium and at the food bank, I’ve been able to find them all,” Nadine adds.

Since registering with The Salvation Army, Nadine has had a positive experience, helping to ease some of the stress she has experienced over the past year.

“It’s been very good. The staff are polite and the food bank offers a healthy variety.”

While volunteering for The Salvation Army during the holiday season, Nadine frequently heard from donors who shared how the organization had made a difference in their lives.

“The Salvation Army means a lot to me.”

This became her favourite aspect of the experience and later influenced her decision to seek assistance when she needed it.

“Some would tell me their stories, explaining how their families were helped and others would mention support during the war. It showed me that The Salvation Army was there for people,” she says.

Today, Nadine is grateful for the assistance she receives through the food bank and believes it is making a meaningful difference in her life. She plans to continue volunteering at the food bank and learning more about the impact The Salvation Army is having in her community.

“The Salvation Army means a lot to me, but also to many others as well.”
