Edmonton’s Golf Classic: More Than a Tournament
This year’s Supreme Group Salvation Army Golf Classic in Edmonton was a great success. For 23 years, including a “virtual” golf classic during COVID-19, this tournament has generated funds to support important Salvation Army projects in and around Edmonton. Over these years, more than $4.4 million has been raised to assist The Salvation Army in carrying out its mission of “Giving Hope Today.”
Past projects include the purchase of community response units and a mobile “bunkhouse” for emergency disaster services, upgrades to Grace Manor seniors home, new cabins and sports and recreation enhancements at Pine Lake Camp, community programs support during COVID-19, as well as capital investment in the new Grace Village project in North Edmonton.
This year, funds raised will go to help build a new commercial kitchen at Castledowns Church. This will enable them to enhance community food security by expanding their feeding programs, as well as provide preparation space and cooking capacity for the city’s emergency disaster services teams.
However, none of this would have happened without the amazing and ongoing support of advisory board member Sally Leder and her husband, John. Sally and John have worked tirelessly to support and promote this event and have been the title sponsors throughout its history. Their enthusiasm and commitment have helped make this tournament the amazing event that it is. It is not just the beautiful setting at the Highlands Golf and Country Club that keeps sponsors and golfers coming back. It is Sally and John’s energy and shared commitment to advancing the work of The Salvation Army in the city of Edmonton—it is something you experience every time you talk to them about why they support The Salvation Army. They truly are part of the “army behind the Army.”
