Consider a Gifts of Securities

Consider a Gifts of Securities

Because of your generosity, people facing some of life’s toughest challenges are finding hope, practical support and a path forward.

Whether someone needs help putting food on the table, recovering from addiction, finding safe shelter, rebuilding after a disaster or accessing long-term care, your support helps ensure The Salvation Army can be there when and where we’re needed most.

For many years, generous supporters have included gifts of securities as part of their charitable giving. As year-end approaches and you review your investment portfolio, you may wish to consider whether a gift of securities could be a meaningful way to support The Salvation Army’s work in your community.

A meaningful gift with potential tax benefits

When you donate appreciated securities directly to The Salvation Army, you can avoid the capital gains tax that would otherwise apply if you sold the securities and then donated the proceeds. You will also receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of your gift.

Gifts of securities can provide an opportunity to turn an investment into practical support for people who need it most.

As with any donation to The Salvation Army, you can choose to direct your gift toward a specific program, ministry or location that is meaningful to you, or allow your gift to be used where the need is greatest.

How to Donate Securities

Step 1: Consult your financial advisor to determine which investments make the greatest financial and philanthropic impact.

Step 2: Ask your broker to transfer your securities by completing the Securities Transfer Form and sending it to RBC Direct Investing. Please note that The Salvation Army cannot initiate the share transfer on your behalf.

Step 3: And finally, save the form and email it to [email protected] to help ensure that you receive your charitable tax receipt in a timely manner.

If you have questions about donating securities, including making a gift through your Will, or would simply like to learn more about The Salvation Army’s work in British Columbia and across Canada, please contact [email protected].

Every gift makes a difference. A gift of securities can be another meaningful way to turn generosity into hope.
