New Food Share Program Opens in Gitwinksihlkw
In the heart of the Nass Valley, where the mountains meet the sky and the Nisga’a people have lived for countless generations, a powerful story of community resilience and partnership continues to unfold. The Salvation Army’s presence in Gitwinksihlkw embodies the Nisga’a principle of Sayt K’il̓im G̱oot (One Heart, One Path, One People). “It means the journey to reconciliation… learning who we are, learning the histories. The history between The Salvation Army and Gitwinksihlkw – learning that is important to me,” reflects Ministry Unit Leader Damian Azak. “Knowing that will go a long way in our journey.”
A Legacy of Partnership
The story began in 1927 when the local Anglican church collapsed. When the Bishop suggested the village relocate rather than rebuild, the Simgigat (Chiefs) chose a different path. They remembered William Moore, who had trained with The Salvation Army as a field captain. This decision led to the establishment of The Salvation Army in Gitwinksihlkw under Field Captain William and Lucy May Moore’s leadership – a partnership sanctioned by the Simgigat and the people.
Leading with Faith and Culture
Today, Ministry Unit Leaders Damian and Erica Azak lead The Salvation Army’s ministry in Gitwinksihlkw. Their work is grounded in scripture and cultural values: “Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your strength, with your whole being and love others in the same way that you love yourself.” This biblical principle aligns beautifully with Sayt K’il̓im G̱oot, guiding their service through the Gińam Wineex (food share program) and beyond.
Serving the Community
The Gińam Wineex program operates with deep respect for Nisga’a traditions.
“In our culture, that’s how we’ve been taught – to share food, to share with each other,” shares Damian Azak, Gitwinksihlkw Ministry Unit Leader.
The program ensures participants maintain their dignity by choosing foods that meet their families’ needs, serving communities up to three hours away from the nearest major town.
The presence of this program in Gitwinksihlkw is crucial for the region’s food security. Without it, community members would have to face long journeys just to access basic necessities, and with no public transit available in the area, this would create an overwhelming barrier for many families. For those without personal vehicles or during harsh weather conditions, accessing food and essential services would be nearly impossible. The Gińam Wineex program bridges this critical gap, ensuring that geography and transportation limitations don’t prevent community members from accessing the nutrition they need.
Looking Forward
Beyond food security, the ministry celebrates community through various methods including children’s programming, Home League, and kids club. The recent expansion of their core building has enhanced their capacity to serve, creating a more efficient and welcoming space for community members.
As Damian reflects, “We’re strong, we’re resilient. Our history shows that we will fight for each other and for what we believe in.” This spirit of resilience and community care continues to shape their ministry, truly embodying Sayt K’il̓im G̱oot: One Heart, One Path, One People.
