My Solace

Maya has been volunteering all her life. She finds peace and calmness through the acts of helping others.

Originally from Lebanon, Maya first came to Canada five years ago to make a better life for her and her children. Recently separated from her husband, she is able to provide for her children with the help of The Salvation Army.

“I often do my grocery shopping here at the center,” says the young mother of two, “Even the smallest assistance helps offset my weekly expenses.”

To express her gratitude, Maya volunteers at The Salvation Army every weekend serving meals with a team of great people.

“I haven’t had the same experience at other places,” explains Maya, “It always felt like people were there for themselves, and not necessarily for the joy of helping others.”

Captivated by the environment, Maya regularly brings her kids to our facility. “I like the feeling being here. I am more comfortable and I feel like I’m a part of a bigger family.”

Maya has dreams to go to university once she completes her English 12 requirements. She is forever grateful for the skills, experience and friendships that volunteering has provided her.
