Officer / Pastor to deploy to Uganda

Major Rick Shirran, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Director for Canada and Bermuda is being deployed to Uganda for a period of eight weeks in order to support the Army’s drought relief project in North East Uganda.

The Central Eastern area of Uganda has suffered a drought in the past five years that has been particularly bad during the 2011 season. Major Rick will be part of a Salvation Army team whose mandate is to focus on food, water and health initiatives, serving more than 4,000 families.

Major Rick is expected to arrive in Uganda on Saturday, September 10. An officer/pastor for more than 28 years, Rick’s experience and expertise will be a valued addition as The Salvation Army continues its vital relief efforts in a country stricken by famine, disease and death, and the lack of clean, drinkable water.
