For more than 100 years, The Salvation Army has been a haven for the vulnerable and lost in the heart of St. John’s, N.L. The effects of poverty, homelessness and drug addiction have taken its toll. With rising unemployment, the need for housing, employment resources and health services, The Salvation Army’s programs and services are more pressing now than ever.

“Scheduled to open in September 2020, the Centre of Hope will continue The Salvation Army’s century-long legacy of providing support and resources to the marginalized and offer a lifeline to those who will become casualties of COVID-19 and an uncertain economy,” says Captain Tony Brushett, executive director.

Currently, The Salvation Army’s New Life Community Centre provides day programs, with 400 clients receiving services such as a community meal, assistance in finding housing, counselling and skills training for future employment.

“Our clients, for the most part, are a mix between single people and families, some with up to 15 members in one family, some are homeless, many are couch surfing or live in unstable conditions,” says Brushett.

While COVID-19 has changed the way services are provided, The Salvation Army continues to support and provide resources to those who need it most.

The new, state-of-the-art social service facility will include an on-site food bank, bi-weekly hot lunches, 20 affordable housing units, crisis intervention, educational programming and more.

“We meet vulnerable individuals and families where they are, help them go where they want to go and be who they want to be,” says Brushett. “As we increase our capacity to serve, we want all people to reach their full potential.”
