Community members gathered on August 13, 2026 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a remarkable act of courage while supporting a growing need in the region.

In 1926, Delilah Gilbert rowed alone across Come By Chance Arm in the darkness while pregnant to seek help after the passing of her father-in-law. One hundred years later, her story was honoured through the sixth annual Dory Row, led by her grandson, Ron White.

Ron successfully completed the approximately 40-minute row across and back, continuing a tradition that commemorates his grandmother’s determination while raising awareness and support for local food banks.

“This story is very precious to me. But why I’m doing it is more important than the story itself,” said Ron. “I’m doing this row to raise awareness of the food banks in our province.”

This year’s event raised more than $2,300 for The Salvation Army’s Arnold’s Cove Food Bank.

Representatives from The Salvation Army joined community members and supporters for the celebration. Captain Stephen Frank, leader of The Salvation Army in Arnold’s Cove and Chance Cove area, noted that the need for food bank assistance continues to grow.

“In the two years that I’ve been here, I’ve seen an increase from 2-5 individuals a month, to 12-16 individuals,” said Major Frank. “So, the need is great.”

For Ron, his family, and the many supporters in attendance, the event was about more than remembering history. It was an opportunity to transform a story of courage from the past into practical support for neighbours facing food insecurity today.

A century after Delilah Gilbert’s courageous journey, her legacy continues to bring communities together and inspire acts of compassion and generosity.
