Feel Good February: The Importance of Exercise at Any Age

Across the Atlantic Division, The Salvation Army is celebrating Feel Good February – a time to take care of your community, your loved ones, and yourself. One important way to do this is through exercise, which helps maintain health and well-being at any age.

At The Salvation Army’s Lakeview Manor in Riverview, NB, seated exercise classes are offered to provide a safe and effective way for residents to stay active, strengthen muscles, and reduce the risk of falls and muscle pain. These classes provide a fun, low-impact option that promotes independence and mobility, while also encouraging social connection.

Tiffany Bradley, a rehab LPN at Lakeview Manor and class instructor, emphasizes the importance of exercise for seniors, saying, “Exercise keeps them active; it keeps their joints and muscles active; it keeps them limber.” She explains that these classes don’t just benefit the body but also stimulate residents mentally.

The beauty of these classes lies in their adaptability. Regardless of everyone’s current strength level, they can participate safely and at their own pace, ensuring a personalized experience. Retired physiotherapist and resident, Gail Boudreau, shared, “It’s very valuable what Tiffany does, I think it’s necessary.”

The classes also foster social interaction. Residents look forward to the sessions, not just for exercise but for the opportunity to connect with others. The upbeat music, including familiar hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, adds to the fun and encourages everyone to move to the rhythm. The familiar tunes bring joy and nostalgia, making the exercises even more enjoyable.

“I know how to do all the exercises; I walk and stay active,” shared Gail. This demonstrates how physical activity can be integrated into daily life, helping residents remain active and in control of their health. Whether it’s walking, exercising, or simply participating in a class, staying active is vital for both physical and mental well-being.

During this Feel Good February, remember that it’s never too late to make exercise a part of your routine. For seniors, seated exercise classes are a fun, safe, and effective way to maintain strength, flexibility, and social connections. Staying active at any age ensures we remain physically and mentally sharp, helping us live life to the fullest.
