Community Collaboration Helps Those Experiencing Homelessness

In a display of community spirit, The Salvation Army, and partnering organizations in Truro, N.S., have joined together to support the local homeless population during these harsh winter months.

With a goal of making a significant difference in the lives of those without shelter, the congregations of The Salvation Army, Groundswell Baptist Church, and the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission have collected hundreds of essential items such as sleeping bags, tents, coats, and winter boots.

“We recognized the pressing need to address homelessness in Truro,” shares Shannon Skafte, community and family service worker at The Salvation Army Truro Corps. “One idea that came about was this winter care opportunity, a chance to pool resources and work together as a small group to emphasize the importance of compassion and unity within our community and provide care for those in need.”

This collaborative effort has already received positive responses from the community, with residents expressing their gratitude for the churches’ proactive approach to addressing homelessness.

“It serves as a shining example of how collective action, regardless of denominational differences, can bring about positive change and foster a sense of community well-being,” added Shannon.

Residents of Truro are encouraged to continue donating warm clothing, and other essentials for those facing homelessness. To donate please visit one of the participating organizations listed above in person or online at, bit.ly/TruroNSCorps
