The Salvation Army’s Lenten Season Reflection

The Salvation Army’s Lenten Season Reflection

As the Lenten season draws to a close and we enter Holy Week, let us make space to reflect on Lent and what it means to The Salvation Army.

With a mission of meeting human needs and transforming communities with the love of Jesus Christ, it should come as no surprise that Lent—a season of self-reflection, fasting and charity—holds a special place in the hearts of many across The Salvation Army.

A 40-day season of prayer where those of the evangelical Christian denomination prepare themselves to journey with Christ through Holy Week, Lent is about preparing yourself spiritually to better understand the profound suffering Jesus faced to bring hope to all of humanity upon the day of His resurrection. All of this allows for a deeper understanding of God’s immeasurable love for humanity.

The mission of The Salvation Army and the purpose of the Lenten season align seamlessly, with one lifelong Salvationist saying. “I do what I do for the love of God, for the love of Jesus, and through them I can practically demonstrate my love for others. To me, both the Lenten season and the work of The Salvation Army is rooted in becoming like Christ for the good of others.”

The above is a sentiment built into the foundation of The Salvation Army by its founder, William Booth, who famously used the slogan “Soup, Soap and Salvation” to describe the work of The Salvation Army.

This slogan is a call to action to feed the hungry and to provide dignity and hope to those in need. Not to force worship onto the recipient of the assistance, but because Jesus has called us to love others, and The Salvation Army takes that message seriously. We do what we do at The Salvation Army because we love God, and we want to share that love with the world.

If this is a message that resonates with you, take a moment to consider what you can do to share your love with the world. Volunteer or donate to The Salvation Army, give your time to a local cause, or simply do your best to be kind and compassionate as you journey though life.
