Salvation Army uses Thrift Store Resources to Help those in Need

In March, The Salvation Army made the difficult decision to close thrift stores in order to keep our employees and customers safe from the spread of COVID-19. The stores, vehicles, and store facilities went unused – that is until they became an asset for our community family services.

“We began receiving sizable donations of food and were at a loss of how we’d store and distribute them,” says Captain Jamie Locke, divisional director of public relations and development. “That’s when we reached out to NRO and they offered us their available resources.”

The Salvation Army’s National Recycling Operations (NRO) thrift stores support The Salvation Army by offering affordable clothing and household goods, while generating revenue that funds our programs and services. Now more than ever, their support is vital to us.

“They didn’t hesitate when we asked for their help. NRO staff used their trucks to make food deliveries to all of the Maritimes and stored thousands of pounds of potatoes in their Dartmouth warehouse. It’s truly remarkable. We wouldn’t be able to help hundreds of Maritimers without them.”

Thank you, NRO, for your tremendous support during these difficult times.

The Salvation Army continues to provide essential services across Canada throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Those who are in need are encouraged to contact their local Salvation Army.
