Anonymous Donation Allows Salvation Army Food Bank to Reopen
In early June, as shelves became empty and contributions diminished, The Salvation Army’s food bank in Sarnia, Ont., was temporarily closed. However, thanks to an anonymous donation, it reopened quickly.
“We had maybe enough to give guests only a couple of items. We felt doing that would not be dignified to our community,” says Captain Brad Webster, leader at The Salvation Army in Sarnia.
The closure lasted two weeks. During this time, staff and volunteers searched for ways to restock. As they worked, unexpected help arrived. A large anonymous monetary donation not only helped restore service but will also allow the food bank to operate over the coming months.
“I still don’t have words to express what it means to us.”
“We had no idea this support was coming,” Captain Webster shares. “I still don’t have words to express what it means to us.”
For clients, access to a fully stocked food bank helps them better manage their monthly budgets. Knowing which items they’ll receive allows them to plan for other expenses.
While nourishment is essential, for some guests, a visit means much more than that.
“When my children are not home, going to the food bank gives me an opportunity to get out of the house and connect with people. Since COVID, I’ve felt isolated from the community and these visits help me feel connected again,” a client at the Sarnia food bank shares.
“We want to build relationships and ensure the process is transformational, not transactional.”
Time for social interaction is an intentional step Salvation Army staff take. Appointments are scheduled for 15 minutes, allowing for personal connection, rather than handing out food and sending people on their way.
“We want to build relationships and ensure the process is transformational, not transactional,” Captain Webster adds.
The large donation was not the only support The Salvation Army received. When the temporary closure was announced, local businesses also reached out to help.
“Some organizations called us, for example, to say: ‘We have an abundance of bread, do you need some?’,” Captain Webster says.
The response from locals has been a testament to the city’s kindness.
“Sarnia is one of the most generous communities that I’ve served in,” Captain Webster says. “To our volunteers and to our community, I’m speechless. Thank you again.”
