Advisory Board Connections in Calgary Extend Mission Impact
Hope in the City Calgary demonstrates the powerful role advisory boards play when they actively leverage their networks in support of The Salvation Army’s mission.
Held on November 26, 2025, at the Telus Convention Centre, the event welcomed nearly 500 guests and raised more than $180,000. A key driver of its success was a subcommittee of advisory board members whose relationships helped connect The Salvation Army with the Calgary Flames organization.
That connection led to Flames president and CEO Robert Hayes serving as guest speaker, with COO Lorenzo DeCicco and mascot Harvey the Hound adding energy and visibility to the event. More importantly, it opened the door to impact well beyond the luncheon itself.
The Wood Automotive Group, a presenting sponsor for over a decade, has long supported The Salvation Army. Founder Gerry Wood contributed to the capital campaign for the Forest Lawn Community Resource Centre, which opened in 2024 and provides vital supports to the community. The Calgary Flames Foundation has also supported the centre, including funding for recreational amenities.
Ahead of the event, Flames leadership and advisory board members toured the centre with Salvation Army leaders. A video from the visit was shared at the luncheon, highlighting the real-life impact of the Army’s programs on Calgary’s most vulnerable.
The relationship continued to grow. In December, the Flames hosted Salvation Army leaders during a national Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. Christmas kettles were featured throughout the game, and a segment with Ron MacLean aired across multiple NHL broadcasts—amplifying the Army’s mission and campaign to a national audience.
This progression—from board connection to local success to national exposure—underscores the vital role advisory boards play as ambassadors and connectors, extending mission impact far beyond a single event.
