Winnipeg’s Toy Mountain Brings Christmas Joy to Grandmother and Her Family

For quite a few years, Lisa relied on a limited income. As a result, the holiday season was stressful for her as she looked for ways to gather enough money to buy gifts for her children and grandson. Thankfully, through The Salvation Army in Winnipeg, she was able to give her family Christmas presents.

“I was part of Toy Mountain when my kids were younger and with my grandson,” Lisa says. “I was in this program for quite a while and it really benefitted me since I was lowincome. It helped me make sure my kids and grandchild didn’t feel left out during Christmastime.”

“It made me feel great to know that I could choose something my children would really enjoy.”

The Salvation Army’s Toy Mountain program is available in various cities across Canada. Donated gifts are set up in a “toy store” style, where participating families can choose what they wish to give their children for Christmas.

“It made me feel great to know that I could choose something my children would really enjoy,” Lisa adds.

The atmosphere at Toy Mountain was something Lisa always appreciated, as it felt welcoming.

“When you walked into the toy store, you were greeted by somebody. They walked you through and showed what toys you can pick.”

Over the years, thanks to Toy Mountain, Lisa has witnessed unforgettable reactions from her family members when they opened their gifts.

“I have a fond memory of my grandson, two years ago. He was into hockey, so I got him a skate pad, which he could use outside. His face just lit up because he already had skates and now he could go skating in the backyard. He really enjoyed it,” Lisa shares.

“It is awesome to know that there is a whole community of people out there willing to support families in need.”

Aside from Toy Mountain, Lisa has also received support from The Salvation Army in different ways during Christmas. Food hampers helped her have enough groceries during the festive season and she was  part of the Adopt-a-Family program.

“It is awesome to know that there is a whole community of people out there willing to support families in need,” Lisa says.

Having experienced different Salvation Army programs, Lisa is grateful to all those who contribute through donations and volunteering.

As a way to give back, Lisa plans to volunteer in the future, either by taking on Christmas kettle shifts or by helping coordinate food hampers.
