Salvation Army Volunteer Commits to Helping Her Community
For over a decade, Flo Warren has been making a difference within her community as a volunteer with The Salvation Army in Bermuda.
She was first introduced to the Army by a friend in 2009 and was quickly drawn in after witnessing the organization’s commitment to serving others. Over the years, Flo became a frequent and dedicated volunteer, supporting a variety of initiatives that help many families across the Island.
If there’s anything I can do to help, I will do it.”
“I love to be part of how they help. I assist arranging food hampers for Christmas and at the food bank. If there’s anything I can do to help, I will do it,” Flo shares.
The impact of Flo’s volunteer efforts is especially visible during The Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle season. The food hampers she helps arrange, alongside other volunteers, make a significant difference for families experiencing financial challenges. Thanks to this work, many people struggling during the holidays can enjoy a nice meal and feel cared for during such a meaningful time of the year.
To Flo, being part of a team that contributes to the community feels rewarding.
“I always saw The Salvation Army as a calming button,” Flo says. “I like their approach when helping people.”
Her volunteer efforts aren’t limited to the holiday season. Throughout the year, Flo continues to support in any way she can, particularly through the weekly feeding program at the Army’s North Street Citadel.
“I now have something to look forward to and that keeps me going.”
Flo’s consistency and dedication have made her a valuable member of The Salvation Army. Beyond the help she provides, she believes her involvement has helped her grow personally.
“Before joining, I was shy, but since then I have become more verbal,” Flo shares. “The experience has changed me. Before, in my day-to-day life, I felt I had nothing to look forward to, but that changed with The Salvation Army. I now have something to look forward to and that keeps me going.”
In addition to volunteering, Flo is also a member of the Army’s West End Community Church and participates in Women’s Ministry, a group of women who meet monthly for faith-based programming and personal development. They also engage in community outreach, serving both locals and people from outside Bermuda.
With this group, Flo recently travelled to Nova Scotia, Canada, for a retreat. The experience showed her how The Salvation Army is making a difference globally.
“I love the idea of travelling and getting to see a little bit of The Salvation Army elsewhere in the world.”
Flo encourages others to get involved with The Salvation Army. Whether as a volunteer, donor or client, she believes the organization has the power to positively influence people’s lives.
