Salvation Army Thrift Store in Lethbridge Leads with Kindness and Care

While the Salvation Army thrift store in Lethbridge, Alta., may be small, its impact on the community is significant. Staff not only help customers find what they need, but also offer a welcoming space built on connection.

For manager Marilyn James, showing kindness has become more important than ever, as many in the city are struggling.

“There are a lot of people hurting right now because of the skyrocketing prices,” Marilyn shares.

The current economic climate is affecting a wide range of residents. In addition to serving individuals who are experiencing homelessness, the store supports a large population of students and seniors who are facing financial challenges.

While accessibility remains the central goal, Marilyn believes care matters equally.

“It’s not just about shopping here. We are about connection,” she adds. “We treat everybody with respect and dignity.”

The welcoming approach has helped staff build close friendships with shoppers.

“They tell us their stories. Some have full-time jobs and sometimes still can’t make it financially,” Marilyn says.

Knowing their customer base well, the team administers inventory according to the needs. For those unhoused, sleeping bags and backpacks are set aside to ensure availability. Individuals facing food insecurity, are referred to the Army’s community and family services department, located in the same building.

“People love it here! With the way things are in the world right now, we try to make our store a happy place,” Marilyn says.

Affordability is one of the main reasons why the community loves The Salvation Army. Many items are priced at just a few dollars and a weekly senior discount is available.

The staff are very active on the thrift store’s Facebook page, where they share fashion tips and encourage followers to model their recent finds.

This location sells a high volume of items each month and is always in need of donations. Clothing and footwear are especially in demand.

“We go through everything pretty fast,” Marilyn says.

Contributions go well beyond providing someone with a warm coat or running shoes. Proceeds help The Salvation Army to fund food assistance, recovery and shelter programs.

Despite the challenges many are facing, Marilyn’s staff continues to make customers smile while supplying essentials to those in need.

“Kindness matters and it never goes out of style,” Marilyn concludes.
