Salvation Army Supports Retiree Dealing with Food Insecurity
Retired life has been a journey of ups and downs for Shirley Dolph from Fort Frances, Ont. As someone who lives alone, inflation has made it challenging to make ends meet at times.
“I am a widow and I’m retired. I basically live paycheque to paycheque,” Shirley says. “With rent and the cost of food and bills, sometimes it gets hard. I look at food prices sometimes and realize I can’t afford it.”
Finding Support
Well aware of The Salvation Army’s work, Shirley came to their food bank to help alleviate her financial struggles. There, she met Ryan Daw, community and family services coordinator, who guided her through the available assistance.
“The food bank has helped a lot. It saves me money and helps me to get by each month,” Shirley adds. “With the food bank, I can save on canned food and vegetables. It helps me have some money left over to pay rent and bills.”
At first, Shirley was unsure if she would qualify for food assistance since she receives an income each month. This is the case for many seniors across the country whose pensions and retirement funds are sometimes not enough to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Ryan assured Shirley that she was always welcome at the food bank whenever she needed.
“I don’t have to go every month but knowing The Salvation Army is there for me if I need to, means a lot,” Shirley shares.
Aside from the food bank, Shirley has also signed up to receive Christmas hampers in the past, which she sees as a blessing.
“My son lives in Sudbury, so I live alone. The hampers help me during the holidays and it makes my day to know that other families are cared for during Christmas,” she adds.
Kindness Returned
Shirley’s current situation is somewhat of a full-circle moment. Years ago, she loved to volunteer in the community whenever she had the chance, including with The Salvation Army.
“I go by an old saying that says ‘the kindness that you give will come back to you, one way or another,’” Shirley says. “I didn’t volunteer to get something in return. I did it because I enjoyed it. But now with my current situation, this help means a lot.”
Feeling Gratitude
Shirley greatly appreciates how caring the staff at The Salvation Army are.
“They have respect for everybody, are friendly and helpful. Ryan and his crew are phenomenal. They are doing an excellent job.”
Shirley is glad to know she is not alone, with The Salvation Army by her side.
