Salvation Army Helps Client Overcome Sudden and Unexpected Challenge

Mohamed was searching for a new place to live and soon found what he thought would be his next home. However, after he had already signed the lease agreement, the landlord unfairly backed out, leaving Mohamed in a situation he never expected to be in.

“Suddenly I was homeless. It was a difficult experience for me,” Mohamed says. The same day he found out he had no place to live, he went to The Salvation Army’s Crossroads Residential Services in Saskatoon, and they gave him a bed at their emergency shelter.

“You were my lifeline, saving me from homelessness.”

Initially, Mohamed felt uncertain and sad about what had happened. Yet he soon realized he had come to a place where he would be helped and treated well.

“I never thought I would be in that situation. So that shocked me a lot,” Mohamed shares. “I felt happy, maybe a couple of hours later, and began coping with the situation.”

Mohamed spent a week at Crossroads. There he received shelter, food, spiritual care, and resources to help him find a new home. He is grateful for how the staff made him feel during his short stay.

“At Crossroads they give me a sense of hope and motivation. What stood out the most, was the kindness and respect I received,” Mohamed adds. “They saw me as a person with potential, and not just as someone in need. I consider my time there as transformative, not only providing me with immediate help but also with long-term encouragement and empowerment.”

“They saw me as a person with potential, and not just as someone in need.”

With the help of The Salvation Army, today Mohamed rents his own room. He feels happy to have private space once again.

During the Christmas season, Mohamed sent a letter to Crossroads in which he detailed his appreciation to the staff for their assistance during one of the most challenging episodes of his life.

“You were my lifeline, saving me from homelessness and despair. Without your compassion and assistance, I would have been left with no shelter, facing a harsh and uncertain fate,” he wrote.

Looking ahead, Mohamed shares that his time with The Salvation Army has motivated him to give back whenever possible.
