The Salvation Army’s 2025 Golf Classic Raises $255,000

The Salvation Army’s 2025 Golf Classic Raises $255,000

The Salvation Army held its 23rd annual Supreme Group Salvation Army Golf Classic on June 3 at Highlands Golf Club in Edmonton. Because of our generous sponsors and donors, we’re thrilled to announce that the tournament raised $255,285 towards a new commercial-grade kitchen for our Castledowns location.

The tournament included an online auction featuring items up for bid, such as comedy tickets, an inflatable paddleboard, and three Edmonton Oilers jerseys, each signed by one of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The auction raised $15,885, which surpassed the $15,000 goal.

Despite the gloomy weather for much of the day, 156 golfers were in great spirits, filling the course with jokes and laughter as they came together for a great cause.

Why does Castledowns need a new kitchen?

This is the first of two consecutive Golf Classic raising money for a $400,000 upgrade to the Castledowns kitchen. With food insecurity in the area rising, the location is one of the busiest food banks in Edmonton, and it provides food for up to 4000 people a month.

The renovation will significantly enhance The Salvation Army’s ability to help the vulnerable individuals and families who turn to The Salvation Army for assistance. With the new kitchen will come more:

  • Community Meals: Castledowns currently hosts a Seniors Luncheon once a month, but the current kitchen’s capacity limits us from feeding more than 50 individuals. Serving Christmas dinner to people experiencing homelessness is also one of The Salvation Army’s hallmark events but has been temporarily put on hold in Edmonton. With a commercial-grade kitchen, we will return to serving meals to our community’s vulnerable on special occasions.
  • Cooking Classes: Many of the individuals and families we serve, especially newcomers to Canada, crave self-sufficiency but lack the basic cooking knowledge for preparing meals with ingredients found in Canadian grocery stores. Not only will we provide hands-on experiences to teach how to prepare a nutritious meal, but we’ll also teach skills for meal planning on a budget and cooking classes for teens as well.
  • Increased Emergency Disaster Services assistance: In times of crisis and natural disasters, this kitchen will be an asset to our Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams. At the moment, EDS is limited to cooking only as much food as its mobile canteens can provide. The new commercial kitchen will enable crews to cook significantly larger quantities of food and deliver them to locations where they can efficiently feed first responders and those impacted by disasters, such as wildfires.

Thank you, Sponsors.
