Volunteers are the Driving Force of the Portage la Prairie Food Bank

The Salvation Army Food Bank in Portage la Prairie thrives thanks to a supportive community and wonderful volunteers.

“Portage really is special” says Major Brenda Hammond, explaining that the need in Portage is greater than in nearby Winnipeg or Brandon.

During the pandemic, the food bank became indispensable, a truly essential service and they were able to maintain their weekly schedule thanks to dedicated volunteers and staff.

“We could provide food security when folks really needed it – serving people who have have been in such a fix otherwise. We are Portage’s food bank and we had to be open and we had to make it work – we could not have done that without our volunteers” says Hammond.
