Hope and Spiritual Renewal at The Salvation Army Sudbury Cedar Place

Intentional guidance focused on Christian values is helping residents of The Salvation Army Sudbury Cedar Place during their time of need.

Chaplain Donna Scott establishes a deeper connection to faith and purpose for individuals and families seeking refuge at Cedar Place. In just two months, Donna has made a significant impact on residents, providing hope and solace by addressing their concerns and challenges through a spiritual lens.

“I am excited about this opportunity for ministry at Sudbury Cedar Place,” Donna says. “My calling as a chaplain is to walk the clients’ faith journey with them. We give them the chance to come to know Jesus in a safe space where everyone is welcome.”

The spiritual guidance and support that Donna brings is part of the healing process while providing a source of inner strength to bring Jesus into residents’ lives. At Sudbury Cedar Place, the hope is for these new or renewed spiritual beliefs to continue to be a source of inner strength, hope, joy, and peace after they leave the emergency shelter and find permanent housing.

Every Sunday, Donna drives many Cedar Place residents, including Teresiah, to pray at The Salvation Army Sudbury Community Church and other places of worship in the city.

“I feel that I have grown spiritually since meeting with Donna, and she has helped me know God better,” Teresiah says. “Also, she is so kind. I feel like I am welcomed and at home at The Salvation Army.”

Teresiah arrived in Sudbury from Kenya last November and is now a devoted parishioner at The Salvation Army Sudbury Community Church. She frequently engages in spiritual discussions with Donna, seeking guidance and life direction.

“Donna is a delightful and wonderful woman of God who prays with the residents in a way that fits in with their personal needs,” explains Barbara Ridley, Executive Director at The Salvation Army Sudbury Cedar Place. “She started a Bible study here in the evenings that has been well attended.”

Donna’s spiritual care giver presence at Sudbury Cedar Place is transformational for residents and is possible thanks to Salvation Army Innovation Grant funding over two years that will improve the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

“This Innovation Grant funding is working miracles for the residents of Cedar Place and we’re very grateful for it,” Barbara says.
